Teeth whitening, a sought-after cosmetic dental procedure, brings out your smile’s best. Yet, like all treatments, it comes with potential side effects.

5 common teeth whitening side effects that you may experience

5 common teeth whitening side effects - Excellence In DentistryTooth Sensitivity: A Common Sensation

Teeth whitening can cause temporary tooth sensitivity, particularly to hot or cold stimuli. Using special toothpaste and avoiding extreme temperatures can ease this mild discomfort.

Gum Irritation: A Temporary Hurdle

Whitening agents can sometimes irritate gums, resulting in redness, soreness, or sensitivity. Following guidelines minimizes this risk, and any discomfort usually subsides within days.

Evenness Dilemma: Managing Results

Uneven whitening results might occur due to enamel differences or stain distribution. Professional treatments reduce this risk, while dentist consultation can address any concerns.

Transient Discomfort: A Passing Phase

Temporary discomfort in teeth and gums is possible during and after whitening. Proper product usage and consulting a dentist for persistent discomfort are recommended.

Enhanced Sensitivity: A Short-Lived Reaction

Some may experience heightened sensitivity post-whitening due to dentin exposure. Desensitizing toothpaste and good oral hygiene practices manage this short-term effect.

Teeth Whitening Safety

Dentist-performed whitening treatments are generally safe. They ensure controlled application of whitening agents for optimal outcomes. Monitoring the process prevents any undue risks.

Who Should Avoid Teeth Whitening?

Certain groups may need to reconsider whitening:

Who Are Not Suitable for Teeth WhiteningPregnant and Breastfeeding Women

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is generally recommended to avoid teeth whitening treatments. The effects of whitening agents on the developing foetus or breastfeeding infant are not well understood. As a precautionary measure, it is advisable to postpone teeth whitening until after pregnancy and the breastfeeding period.

Individuals with Tooth Sensitivity or Allergies

People who already experience significant tooth sensitivity or have a history of allergic reactions to dental products may not be suitable candidates for teeth whitening. The bleaching agents used in whitening treatments can sometimes exacerbate tooth sensitivity or cause allergic reactions. It is important to discuss any existing tooth sensitivity or allergies with our dentist before undergoing teeth whitening.

Children and Adolescents

Teeth whitening treatments are generally not recommended for children and adolescents. Their teeth are still developing, and the long-term effects of teeth whitening on their oral health and tooth structure are not well understood. It is best to wait until they reach adulthood before considering teeth whitening.

Individuals with Dental Restorations

Teeth whitening treatments do not alter the colour of dental restorations, such as dental fillings, crowns, or veneers. If you have visible restorations in your front teeth and wish to whiten your teeth, it is important to consult with our dentist as we can evaluate your situation and discuss alternative options, such as replacing or adjusting the restorations to match the new shade of your whitened teeth.

Severe Tooth Decay or Gum Disease

Teeth whitening treatments are not suitable for individuals with untreated or severe tooth decay or gum disease. Whitening agents can penetrate the damaged tooth structure or irritate inflamed gum tissues, potentially causing further complications. It is crucial to address any existing oral health issues before considering teeth whitening.

Individuals with Tetracycline Stained Teeth

Tetracycline is an antibiotic that, when used during tooth development, can cause significant tooth discoloration. In cases of severe tetracycline staining, traditional teeth whitening methods may not effectively lighten the teeth. Alternative cosmetic dental treatments, such as veneers or dental bonding, may be more suitable to address the staining.

Have been coming to this practice for years, despite it being a good long drive. Initially I had concerns when Andre handed the reigns over, but these concerns proved unfounded as the team continued to be just as kind, caring and attentive as always. Any dental work is always carried out thoroughly and diligently and I always leave feeling like nothing has been missed or rushed. In addition, the practice uses ‘the wand’ for anaesthesia, a barely noticeable and ultra fine needle that administers slowly and without much discomfort. As someone who has a fear of needles this has helped hugely. I often struggle with tooth sensitivity so the hygienist visit is always something I dread, but Agota’s reassuring and patient attitude makes things go much more smoothly. Honestly can’t recommend them highly enough.

Highly recommend. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years. It’s not local to me but I travel here because it’s worth it. The care here is truly excellent. I was worried when Andre retired but Keelin is every bit as good and so I will continue to come here.
