Why might you need it

Excellence In Dentistry - Why you might need teeth whiteningThere are several reasons why a person may choose to undergo tooth whitening. Some common reasons include:

  1. Discoloured or stained teeth: Teeth can become discoloured or stained over time due to factors such as aging, smoking, certain medications, and consumption of dark-coloured foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine. Tooth whitening can help remove these stains and restore the natural colour of your teeth.
  2. Special occasions: People may also choose to whiten their teeth for special occasions, such as weddings, job interviews, or reunions, to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence.
  3. Aesthetic reasons: Many people simply want to improve the appearance of their teeth and enhance their smile. Tooth whitening can be a safe and effective way to achieve this.

It is important to note that not everyone is a good candidate for tooth whitening. For example, if you have certain dental problems, such as gum disease or cavities, our dentist may recommend that you address those issues before undergoing a whitening treatment. Additionally, tooth whitening may not be effective for certain types of stains, such as those caused by certain medications or excessive fluoride exposure. It’s always best to consult with a dental professional to determine whether tooth whitening is right for you.

Perfect for your special occasion

  • Look Youthful: Whiter teeth can take years off your appearance, giving you a youthful glow.
  • Memorable Photos: Capture picture-perfect moments with a radiant smile that will be cherished forever.

Enjoy long-lasting results, which can persist for anywhere between six months to two years, adding to the overall excellence of the outcome!

The science behind teeth whitening

Only Hydrogen Peroxide has the safe ability to lighten your teeth. When properly formulated and used at the correct concentration, it’s both effective and safe. Hydrogen Peroxide breaks down rapidly (within about 1 hour) into inactive by-products, rendering it ineffective.

At Excellence In Dentistry, we utilise Hydrogen Peroxide in our in-chair bleaching process, consistently replacing it to maintain effectiveness.

For take-home kits, dental companies incorporate Carbamide Peroxide, which produces active Hydrogen Peroxide for 6-8 hours.

The British Dental Bleaching Society recommends using 10% Carbamide Peroxide, providing a sustained release of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, considered the most effective concentration.

Who will do it

Our dental professional, such as a dentist or a dental hygienist, can perform tooth whitening procedures for you. Before any procedure, they will examine your teeth and determine whether you are a good candidate for tooth whitening. They will also discuss the different treatment options with you and recommend the most suitable one based on your needs and preferences. In some cases, they may also provide guidance on how to maintain your whitened teeth after the procedure.

Dental examination

Before the whitening treatment, our dentist will examine your teeth and gums to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. They will also check for any dental issues that may need to be addressed first.

The procedure

The whitening gel needs to make contact with your teeth. Even if it’s just a small area, like a corner of a sugar cube in red wine, it’ll spread throughout the whole tooth. Think of it as a delightful soaking process. The longer your teeth hang out with the whitening gel, the faster they’ll lighten up.

At Excellence In Dentistry, we’ve got a tag team of instant in-office whitening and home kits to make your pearly whites shine. Here’s the scoop on both:

  • In-Office Whitening/Power Bleaching: This is like the speedy superhero of whitening. We use advanced LED/laser tech to zap those stains away. Perfect if you’ve got a big event around the corner or some stubborn stains. It’s a 2-hour session that gives your teeth a boost. And guess what? We’ll hand you a kit to use at home so your shade stays steady.
  • Take-Home Whitening: Our dental wizards craft custom trays that fit your mouth like a glove. We’ll give you the lowdown on safely using the gel at home, with any special tips for your case.

A bleached tooth’s always going to outshine an unbleached one. But if your diet’s a fan of staining agents, a touch-up in 6 months to a year might be your thing. We’ll guide you on keeping your trays in tip-top shape for whenever you want to give them another whirl.

Aftercare

Aftercare is an important aspect of tooth whitening, as it can help maintain the results of the treatment and keep your teeth healthy. Here are some tips for aftercare following a tooth whitening procedure:

  1. Avoid food and drinks that can stain your teeth: For the first few days after the procedure, it’s best to avoid dark-coloured foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine, as well as acidic foods and drinks like citrus fruits and juices.
  2. Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
  3. Use sensitivity toothpaste: If you experience tooth sensitivity after the whitening treatment, our dentist may recommend using a toothpaste specially formulated for sensitive teeth.
  4. Schedule regular dental check-ups: Regular dental check-ups can help detect any dental issues early on and prevent them from becoming more serious.
  5. Consider touch-up treatments: Depending on the method used, the results of tooth whitening may fade over time. The dentist may recommend touch-up treatments to maintain the brightness of your smile.

It’s important to follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by our dentist, as they may vary depending on the method used and your individual needs. By following these aftercare tips, you can help maintain the results of your tooth whitening procedure and keep your smile looking bright and healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any side effects of teeth whitening?

Some people may experience temporary teeth sensitivity or gum irritation after teeth whitening treatment. These effects are usually mild and subside shortly after the treatment.

How long does teeth whitening last?

The longevity of teeth whitening results varies depending on individual factors such as lifestyle habits and oral hygiene practices. On average, the effects of teeth whitening can last anywhere from several months to a couple of years.

Can all types of stains be removed with teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is most effective at removing surface stains caused by food, drinks, and tobacco use. However, certain intrinsic stains (stains that occur from within the tooth) may not respond as well to teeth whitening treatments.

Can teeth whitening damage tooth enamel?

When performed correctly and in moderation, teeth whitening does not damage tooth enamel. However, excessive and improper use of whitening products may weaken enamel over time.

Will teeth whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Teeth sensitivity is a common side effect of teeth whitening, but it is usually temporary. Our dental professionals take precautions to minimise sensitivity, and we offer desensitising treatments to help manage any discomfort during the whitening process.

Is teeth whitening suitable for everyone?

Teeth whitening is generally safe for most individuals. However, it may not be recommended for pregnant or lactating women, children, individuals with certain dental conditions, or those with allergies to the whitening agents. Our dental professionals will assess your oral health and advise you on the suitability of teeth whitening.

Are there any alternatives to teeth whitening?

Yes, there are alternative cosmetic dental treatments available, such as dental veneers or dental bonding, which can address teeth discolouration. Our dental professionals will evaluate your needs and provide recommendations based on your specific situation.

How can I maintain my newly whitened teeth?

To maintain the results of your tooth whitening treatment, it is essential to practice good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups. Avoiding or limiting staining substances like coffee, tea, and tobacco can also help preserve your newly whitened smile.

Have been coming to this practice for years, despite it being a good long drive. Initially I had concerns when Andre handed the reigns over, but these concerns proved unfounded as the team continued to be just as kind, caring and attentive as always. Any dental work is always carried out thoroughly and diligently and I always leave feeling like nothing has been missed or rushed. In addition, the practice uses ‘the wand’ for anaesthesia, a barely noticeable and ultra fine needle that administers slowly and without much discomfort. As someone who has a fear of needles this has helped hugely. I often struggle with tooth sensitivity so the hygienist visit is always something I dread, but Agota’s reassuring and patient attitude makes things go much more smoothly. Honestly can’t recommend them highly enough.

Highly recommend. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years. It’s not local to me but I travel here because it’s worth it. The care here is truly excellent. I was worried when Andre retired but Keelin is every bit as good and so I will continue to come here.
