In the ever-evolving world of orthodontics, traditional braces have long been the go-to solution for correcting dental misalignments. However, the introduction of Invisalign has revolutionised the way people approach teeth straightening. With its discreet and removable aligners, Invisalign has gained popularity among adults and teenagers alike. But can this modern approach effectively tackle more complex issues like overbites?

Can Invisalign fix overbite - Excellence In DentistryWhat is an Overbite?

An overbite, also known as a “deep bite” or “malocclusion,” is a common dental condition where the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth when the mouth is closed. In a normal bite, the upper teeth should slightly overlap the lower teeth, but in an overbite, this overlap is excessive. Overbites can vary in severity, with some being minor and others more pronounced. It’s important to address significant overbites, as they can lead to dental and oral health issues, including misalignment of the jaw, wear and tear on the teeth, and potential speech problems. Dental treatments such as braces, orthodontic appliances, or surgery may be recommended to correct an overbite, depending on its severity and the individual’s age.

What Can be the Damages Caused by an Overbite?

What Can be the Damages Caused by an OverbiteAn overbite, if left unaddressed, can potentially lead to various dental and oral health issues, including:

  1. Tooth Wear: Overbites can cause excessive wear and tear on the front teeth due to constant contact and friction. This can lead to chipped, worn, or flattened teeth.
  2. Gum Problems: The misalignment of teeth in an overbite can cause gums to become irritated and potentially lead to gum recession, which exposes the tooth roots and increases the risk of gum disease.
  3. Speech Difficulties: In severe cases, overbites can affect speech patterns and pronunciation, leading to speech difficulties.
  4. Jaw Pain: Overbites can strain the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joint (TMJ), leading to jaw pain, headaches, and even temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).
  5. Aesthetic Concerns: Overbites can affect the appearance of the smile, leading to self-esteem and confidence issues for some individuals.
  6. Difficulty Chewing: Misaligned teeth in an overbite can make it challenging to bite and chew food properly, potentially impacting nutrition.
  7. Oral Hygiene Challenges: Overlapping teeth can create spaces that are difficult to clean, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

The Invisalign Approach

Addressing Overbites with InvisalignNow that we have a grasp of what an overbite entails, let’s delve into the Invisalign approach. Invisalign employs a series of customised clear aligners to gradually shift teeth into their desired positions. The aligners are made of smooth, BPA-free plastic, which makes them comfortable to wear and nearly invisible. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before progressing to the next set in the series.

The big question remains: Can Invisalign effectively correct overbites? The answer largely depends on the severity of the overbite. Invisalign has proven to be successful in treating mild to moderate cases of overbites. These are situations where the overbite is not extremely pronounced and doesn’t involve complex skeletal issues. However, severe cases of overbites may still require traditional braces or other orthodontic interventions.

Invisalign’s Strengths

  1. Aesthetic Appeal: One of the primary reasons individuals opt for Invisalign is its aesthetic appeal. The clear aligners are discreet, making them an attractive choice for those who are conscious about their appearance during the teeth-straightening journey.
  2. Removability: Invisalign aligners are removable, allowing wearers to enjoy their favourite foods without restrictions. Brushing and flossing are also more convenient, as there are no brackets or wires to navigate around.
  3. Comfort: The smooth plastic of Invisalign aligners is designed to minimise discomfort and irritation, which is often associated with traditional braces.
  4. Customised Treatment Plan: Invisalign treatment begins with a 3D scan of your teeth, allowing for a precise and customised treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Each aligner is designed to exert the right amount of pressure at the right time.
  5. Gradual Progression: Invisalign’s gradual approach to shifting teeth is not only effective but can also lead to a more comfortable experience for the patient.

  1. Patient Compliance: The success of Invisalign treatment heavily depends on patient compliance. Aligners should be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day to ensure effective results.
  2. Regular Follow-ups: Just like with traditional braces, regular check-ups with your orthodontist are crucial to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
  3. Treatment Duration: The duration of Invisalign treatment varies based on the complexity of the case. Mild to moderate overbites might take anywhere from 6 to 18 months, while more complex cases could require longer treatment periods.
  4. Professional Expertise: Choosing an experienced orthodontist who is skilled in using Invisalign to address overbites is paramount. Their expertise will play a significant role in determining the success of your treatment.

How Long Does it Require to Fix an Overbite with Invisalign?

The duration to fix an overbite with Invisalign can vary depending on the severity of the overbite and individual factors. Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment option that uses clear aligners to gradually shift the teeth into their desired positions. Here are some general considerations:

  1. Mild Overbite: For individuals with a mild overbite, treatment with Invisalign may take approximately 6 to 12 months.
  2. Moderate Overbite: If the overbite is of moderate severity, treatment typically ranges from 12 to 18 months.
  3. Severe Overbite: In cases of a severe overbite, treatment with Invisalign may take longer, often spanning 18 months to 2 years or more.

It’s important to note that treatment duration can be influenced by factors such as the patient’s age, compliance with wearing the aligners, and the specific treatment plan created by our orthodontist. Regular check-ups are essential to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.

Can Invisalign be Used to Treat Overbites for Young Patients?

Invisalign can be used to treat overbites in younger patients, including those under 12 years old, but several factors need to be considered:

  1. Dental Development: Younger patients may not have all their permanent teeth erupted, which is a consideration when planning orthodontic treatment. Invisalign treatment is typically more effective when the majority of permanent teeth have come in.
  2. Patient Compliance: Invisalign relies on patients wearing the aligners for the recommended 20-22 hours per day. Younger patients may find it more challenging to comply with this requirement compared to older teenagers or adults.
  3. Severity of the Overbite: The severity of the overbite plays a significant role. Invisalign is generally effective for mild to moderate cases. Severe overbites may require traditional braces or a combination of treatment methods.
  4. Consultation with our Orthodontist: It’s crucial for parents to consult with our experienced orthodontist who specialises in treating younger patients. Our orthodontist will evaluate your child’s specific case, dental development, and individual needs to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Have been coming to this practice for years, despite it being a good long drive. Initially I had concerns when Andre handed the reigns over, but these concerns proved unfounded as the team continued to be just as kind, caring and attentive as always. Any dental work is always carried out thoroughly and diligently and I always leave feeling like nothing has been missed or rushed. In addition, the practice uses ‘the wand’ for anaesthesia, a barely noticeable and ultra fine needle that administers slowly and without much discomfort. As someone who has a fear of needles this has helped hugely. I often struggle with tooth sensitivity so the hygienist visit is always something I dread, but Agota’s reassuring and patient attitude makes things go much more smoothly. Honestly can’t recommend them highly enough.

Highly recommend. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years. It’s not local to me but I travel here because it’s worth it. The care here is truly excellent. I was worried when Andre retired but Keelin is every bit as good and so I will continue to come here.
