Are you a smoker contemplating dental implants? The question, “Can smokers get dental implants?” often arises among individuals considering this dental restoration option.

Can smokers get dental implants (2)Effects of Smoking on Dental Health

Smoking has long been associated with a multitude of detrimental effects on dental health. The habit of smoking tobacco, whether through cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, can wreak havoc on your teeth and gums, leading to various oral health issues. Here are some of the significant effects of smoking on dental health:

  1. Increased Risk of Gum Disease: Smokers are at a considerably higher risk of developing gum disease, medically known as periodontal disease. This condition occurs when the tissues and bone supporting the teeth become infected and inflamed. Smoking weakens the immune system’s ability to fight off infections, making smokers more susceptible to gum disease. The gums may become swollen, red, and bleed easily, a condition known as gingivitis, which can progress to more severe periodontitis if left untreated.
  2. Tooth Discoloration: One of the most noticeable effects of smoking on dental health is tooth discoloration. The tar and nicotine present in tobacco products can stain tooth enamel, causing teeth to turn yellow or even brown over time. This staining can be challenging to remove through regular brushing and may require professional teeth-whitening procedures to restore a brighter, more attractive smile.
  3. Bad Breath: Smoking can also lead to persistent bad breath, commonly referred to as halitosis. The chemicals in tobacco smoke leave a foul odour in the mouth, which can be quite embarrassing and unpleasant for both smokers and those around them.
  4. Delayed Healing: Smoking hinders the body’s ability to heal itself, and this effect extends to the mouth. After dental procedures, such as tooth extraction or oral surgery, smokers tend to experience slower healing times compared to non-smokers. This delayed healing can lead to complications and prolong recovery periods.
  5. Increased Risk of Oral Cancer: Perhaps the most serious consequence of smoking on dental health is the increased risk of oral cancer. Smokers are at a substantially higher risk of developing oral cancer, which can affect the lips, tongue, throat, and other oral tissues. Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving survival rates, making regular dental check-ups essential for smokers.
  6. Reduced Success of Dental Implants: For individuals considering dental implants to replace missing teeth, smoking can pose a significant challenge. Dental implants require a strong foundation of healthy bone and gum tissue for successful integration. Smoking can compromise the success of dental implant surgery by increasing the risk of complications, including implant failure.

Can Smokers Get Dental Implants?

Now, the crucial question arises: Can smokers get dental implants?

Yes, but with Caution

While it’s possible for smokers to get dental implants, it’s essential to proceed with caution. Dentists often recommend that smokers quit or reduce their smoking habit before undergoing implant surgery.

Smoking Cessation

Quitting smoking or substantially reducing tobacco use before undergoing dental implant surgery can have a profound impact on the procedure’s success. Smoking cessation provides several benefits:

  1. Improved Healing: Smoking is known to slow down the body’s healing processes, which is particularly concerning during the crucial osseointegration phase of dental implant treatment. Faster healing reduces the risk of complications.
  2. Lower Risk of Infection: Smoking weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. Infections around the implant site can jeopardize the success of the procedure.
  3. Enhanced Overall Oral Health: Quitting smoking not only improves the prospects of dental implant success but also contributes to better oral health in general. It reduces the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and other smoking-related oral issues.

Have been coming to this practice for years, despite it being a good long drive. Initially I had concerns when Andre handed the reigns over, but these concerns proved unfounded as the team continued to be just as kind, caring and attentive as always. Any dental work is always carried out thoroughly and diligently and I always leave feeling like nothing has been missed or rushed. In addition, the practice uses ‘the wand’ for anaesthesia, a barely noticeable and ultra fine needle that administers slowly and without much discomfort. As someone who has a fear of needles this has helped hugely. I often struggle with tooth sensitivity so the hygienist visit is always something I dread, but Agota’s reassuring and patient attitude makes things go much more smoothly. Honestly can’t recommend them highly enough.

Highly recommend. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years. It’s not local to me but I travel here because it’s worth it. The care here is truly excellent. I was worried when Andre retired but Keelin is every bit as good and so I will continue to come here.
