Dental Crowns in Surrey at Excellence In Dentistry

Who needs dental crowns?

Dental Crowns in Surrey at Excellence In DentistryDental crowns are recommended for individuals facing various dental issues, including:

  1. Tooth Decay: When a tooth has extensive decay that cannot be addressed with a simple filling, a crown provides comprehensive coverage and support.
  2. Broken or Fractured Teeth: Dental crowns are an effective solution for teeth that are broken, cracked, or fractured, restoring both strength and appearance.
  3. Root Canal Therapy: Following a root canal procedure, a dental crown is often placed to protect and strengthen the treated tooth.
  4. Large Fillings: Teeth with large fillings that compromise their structural integrity may require crowns to provide additional support and prevent further damage.
  5. Cosmetic Enhancement: For cosmetic purposes, dental crowns are used to improve the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth, creating a more aesthetically pleasing smile.
  6. Worn Down Teeth: Individuals with excessively worn down teeth, whether due to teeth grinding or other factors, may benefit from crowns to restore proper function.
  7. Tooth Protection: Crowns are employed to protect weak teeth from further damage, especially in cases where the enamel is compromised.
  8. Dental Bridges: Crowns play a crucial role in supporting dental bridges, anchoring them securely to adjacent natural teeth.
  9. Implant Restorations: Dental crowns are used to restore dental implants, serving as the visible and functional part of the artificial tooth.
  10. Preventive Measures: In some cases, dental crowns are proactively placed to prevent potential issues, particularly in patients with a high risk of tooth damage.

Key benefits of dental crowns

Dental crowns offer a range of benefits, making them a versatile solution for various dental issues:

  1. Restoration of Tooth Structure: Crowns provide structural support to teeth that are damaged, broken, or weakened, restoring their integrity.
  2. Aesthetic Enhancement: Crowns can enhance the appearance of misshapen or discoloured teeth, improving overall smile aesthetics.
  3. Protection After Root Canal: Following a root canal procedure, crowns protect the treated tooth from further damage and strengthen it for long-term functionality.
  4. Durability: Made from durable materials such as porcelain or ceramic fused to metal, crowns are resilient and can withstand the forces of biting and chewing.
  5. Improved Tooth Function: Crowns restore proper tooth function, enabling individuals to bite and chew without discomfort or difficulty.
  6. Prevention of Further Damage: Crowns act as a barrier, preventing further deterioration of teeth with extensive decay or large fillings.
  7. Support for Dental Bridges: Crowns serve as essential anchors for dental bridges, ensuring stability and proper alignment of the artificial teeth.
  8. Protection for Weak Teeth: Crowns protect weak or fractured teeth, reducing the risk of further damage and potential tooth loss.
  9. Customisation: Crowns are custom-made to match the shape, size, and colour of natural teeth, providing a seamless and natural-looking restoration.
  10. Longevity: Well-maintained dental crowns can last for many years, offering a durable and reliable solution for various dental concerns.
  11. Versatility: Dental crowns are versatile and can be used for both functional and cosmetic purposes, making them a comprehensive treatment option.
  12. Preventive Measure: In some cases, crowns are proactively placed to prevent potential issues, safeguarding the long-term health of the tooth.

The procedure

The procedure for dental crowns typically involves several steps:

  1. Consultation and Assessment: The process begins with a thorough examination and consultation with our dentist. They assess the condition of the tooth, discuss treatment options, and determine if a dental crown is the most suitable solution.
  2. Tooth Preparation: To accommodate the crown, a portion of the tooth’s outer layer is removed. This ensures a proper fit for the crown without altering the tooth’s overall structure.
  3. Impression Taking: After tooth preparation, an impression of the tooth is taken. This impression serves as a mould for creating a custom-fitted crown that matches the size, shape, and alignment of the natural tooth.
  4. Temporary Crown Placement: While the permanent crown is being fabricated, a temporary crown is often placed to protect the prepared tooth. This temporary crown ensures functionality and aesthetics until the final restoration is ready.
  5. Crown Fabrication: The dental laboratory uses the impression to craft the permanent crown. The choice of materials, such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal fused to ceramic, is based on factors like strength and aesthetics.
  6. Crown Fitting and Adjustment: Once the permanent crown is ready, it is fitted onto the prepared tooth. The dentist checks the fit, bite, and aesthetics, making any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal comfort and function.
  7. Cementation: Once the fitting is perfect, the permanent crown is cemented onto the tooth using a dental adhesive. This ensures a secure and long-lasting attachment.
  8. Post-Placement Guidance: After the crown is in place, the dentist provides care instructions and guidance on oral hygiene practices. Regular check-ups are recommended to monitor the crown’s condition and overall oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there different types of dental crowns?

Yes, there are various types of dental crowns, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Each type has its unique advantages, and the choice depends on factors such as durability, aesthetics, and the location of the tooth.

How long do dental crowns last?

The lifespan of dental crowns varies, but with proper care, they can last 10-15 years or even longer. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices contribute to the longevity of dental crowns.

Is the dental crown procedure painful?

The dental crown procedure is generally not painful as it is performed under local anaesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort. Patients may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity after the procedure, which typically subsides quickly.

Do dental crowns look natural?

Yes, our modern dental crowns are designed to closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth. Porcelain and ceramic crowns, in particular, provide a natural translucency and colour, blending seamlessly with the surrounding teeth.

Can I choose the material for my dental crown?

Absolutely. Patients can discuss material options with our dentist based on factors such as aesthetics, durability, and budget. Common materials include porcelain, ceramic, metal, and porcelain-fused-to-metal.

Is the dental crown placement a one-time procedure?

The placement of a dental crown typically requires two appointments. The first involves tooth preparation, impression-taking, and temporary crown placement. The second appointment involves fitting and cementing the permanent crown.

Can dental crowns be placed on any tooth?

Dental crowns can be placed on most teeth, provided there is enough healthy tooth structure to support the crown. However, the location and function of the tooth are factors considered in the decision-making process.

Do dental crowns require special care?

While dental crowns do not require special care, maintaining good oral hygiene practices, regular dental check-ups, and avoiding excessive force or trauma can contribute to their longevity.

What is the difference between crowns and veneers?

Dental crowns and veneers both enhance the appearance of teeth, but crowns encase the entire tooth, while veneers cover only the front surface. Crowns are typically used for structural restoration, while veneers are more cosmetic.

Can dental crowns fix a broken or chipped tooth?

Yes, dental crowns are an effective solution for repairing broken or chipped teeth. They provide structural support and restore the tooth’s shape and functionality.

Are dental crowns suitable for front teeth?

Yes, dental crowns can be used on front teeth for cosmetic reasons or to address structural issues. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are often chosen for their natural appearance.

What should I do if my dental crown becomes loose or falls off?

If a dental crown becomes loose or falls off, it is important to contact our dentist promptly. Avoid chewing on the affected side, and keep the crown in a safe place until it can be re-cemented by a dental professional.

Have been coming to this practice for years, despite it being a good long drive. Initially I had concerns when Andre handed the reigns over, but these concerns proved unfounded as the team continued to be just as kind, caring and attentive as always. Any dental work is always carried out thoroughly and diligently and I always leave feeling like nothing has been missed or rushed. In addition, the practice uses ‘the wand’ for anaesthesia, a barely noticeable and ultra fine needle that administers slowly and without much discomfort. As someone who has a fear of needles this has helped hugely. I often struggle with tooth sensitivity so the hygienist visit is always something I dread, but Agota’s reassuring and patient attitude makes things go much more smoothly. Honestly can’t recommend them highly enough.

Highly recommend. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years. It’s not local to me but I travel here because it’s worth it. The care here is truly excellent. I was worried when Andre retired but Keelin is every bit as good and so I will continue to come here.
