Composite bonding, also known as dental composite resins, constitutes a type of dental cement crafted from synthetic resins. They are utilised in dentistry due to their tooth-like look, resistance to dehydration, user-friendly manipulation, and cost-effectiveness.
Composition of Dental Composite Resins
Bis-GMA and other dimethacrylate monomers (TEGMA, UDMA, HDDMA): These are the base materials that form the resin matrix. Bis-GMA, or bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate, is a common monomer used in dental composites.
Filler material such as silica
The filler material gives the composite greater strength, wear resistance, decreased polymerisation shrinkage, improved translucency, fluorescence and colour, and a reduced exothermic reaction on polymerisation. The fillers can be made of glasses or ceramics, including crystalline silica, silicone dioxide, lithium/barium-aluminium glass, borosilicate glass containing zinc/strontium/lithium, zirconia-silica, or zirconium oxide.
In most applications, a photoinitiator is added to the composite. This substance starts the polymerisation reaction of the resins when blue light is applied. Common photoinitiators include camphorquinone (CQ), phenylpropanedione (PPD), or lucirin (TPO).
Coupling agent such as silane: This is used to enhance the bond between the resin matrix and the filler material.
These can control the rate of reaction.
Safety and Longevity of Composite Resins
Composite resins of composite bonding dental treatment are considered safe for use in dentistry. They are biocompatible, meaning they are not harmful to living tissue. They are also durable and can withstand the pressures of chewing and biting. However, the longevity of composite resin restorations can depend on various factors, including the skill of the dentist, patient characteristics, and the type and location of damage.
Aesthetics of Composite Resins
One of the main advantages of composite resins is their aesthetic appeal. They can be made in a wide range of tooth colours, allowing for a near-invisible restoration of teeth. This makes them a popular choice for fillings, especially in visible areas of the mouth.
